Meet the team at Jamala Madikwe

Lazarus Boikie Nokane or as he is affectionately known by all the Jamala-ian’s……Lazzie.

Lazzie has worked as a professional Ranger/Guide at Jamala Madikwe since 2010. Humble, gentle and compassionate few guides could fit the Jamala spirit better than this legend. He was born in Madikwe Game Reserve on an old farm called Leeuhoek “Lioncorner” near Ambush Alley and holds an incredible amount of knowledge about the land and it’s inhabitants. When Laz is in tune with the bush his intuition and ability to quietly track game will take you’re breath away. (Image by guests Lara Cowtan and Stuart Vincent)

We sat down with Laz and asked him a couple of questions

1. How long have you been a professional guide ?

I started as a tracker for other guides in Madikwe Game Reserve. I realized I had to better myself and qualified as a professional guide 8 years ago.

2. How has Madikwe changed over the years since your childhood ?

It has changed a lot, for the better, there are now numerous opportunities for work for the local communities. The land is still as beautiful as it has always been.

3. What would be you’re all time favorite animal to track and view in Madikwe Game Reserve, and why ?

Elephants, elephants and elephants they are intelligent gentle creatures I just love them.

4. What is your favorite place to visit around Madikwe ?

Ambush Alley the views here are incredible it reminds me of home.

5. What animal sighting would you still like to have ?

All of them I never tire of seeing the animals everyday is a new adventure.

6. Describe why you love Africa and the bushveld ?

Because I was born here, this is my land its in my blood.

  • Some days you just need to post sunset pics......beautiful shot taken by our guide Josh. “People who dream when they sleep at night know of a special kind of happiness which the world of the day holds not, a placid ecstasy, and ease of heart, that are like honey on the tongue. They also know that the real glory of dreams lies in their atmosphere of unlimited freedom.”- Out of Africa .

  • The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller (or Coraciidae) family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a vagrant to the southern Arabian Peninsula. It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about on the ground. Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to a fair height (69 to 144 metres), descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are different in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults.

  • The Black Mamba
The first formal description of the black mamba was made in 1864 by German-born British zoologist Albert Günther. A single specimen was one of many species of snake collected by John Kirk, a naturalist who accompanied David Livingstone on the 1858–1864 Second Zambesi expedition. This specimen is the holotype and is housed in the Natural History Museum, London. The generic name of the species is derived from the Ancient Greek words dendron (δένδρον), "tree", and aspis (ἀσπίς) "asp", and the specific epithet polylepis is derived from the Ancient Greek poly (πολύ) meaning "many" and lepis (λεπίς) meaning "scale".
The term "mamba" is derived from the Zulu word "imamba". The black mamba's reputation for being ready to attack at any time is exaggerated; it is usually provoked by perceived threats such as the blocking of its movements and ability to retreat. The species' reputed speed has also been exaggerated; it cannot move more quickly than 16 km/h (10 mph).
