Madikwe – A Hidden Gem

Madikwe Game Reserve.

Madikwe is currently considered the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa. The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 ha region of untamed beauty.

Considered one of the best conservation areas in Africa, it offers the Big 5 and Super 7(witch include rare Wild dog and Cheetah). The reserve is relatively unknown a real hidden gem within South Africa.

The region where Madikwe now stands was previously used as farmland. The poor soil meant that farming was mostly unsuccessful and in 1991 the area was declared a national park to help economically uplift the disadvantaged area.

Madikwe is situated against the Botswana border on the cusp of the Kalahari. It is roughly 3.5 hours by car from Johannesburg International Airport. The park is home to approximately 66 large mammals and roughly 300 bird species. You will find all this flora and fauna in an area compromising of vast open plains, grasslands, woodlands, rocky outcrops and single mountains.
